SAINTS completed an impressive victory over their local rivals Denton in Saturday’s JW Lees Lancashire County League match.

Having been put into bat, Denton were reduced to 35-3 by Saints’ attack of Tharanga Laksitha and Michael Batty.

Steve Roebuck and Danny Walker added 84 for the fourth wicket before Walker (43) became Batty’s second victim, and Jack Stenson soon became his third.

Roebuck continued to look solid as wickets fell at the other end, Rasheed Nadeem accounting for Johnny and David Lees for one apiece, while David Mayne had Tim Standing LBW for 11.

Roebuck’s resistance finally came to an end on 70 and the 10th wicket soon fell to leave Denton 174 all out.

In reply, Adam Hawley looked like a man with a train to catch as he dispatched the ball to all corners of the ground before being out for 23 with the score on 26-1.

Barry Williams scored six before being dismissed, bringing skipper Matt Wake to join Paul Green at the crease. The rest of the match was an exhibition of batting by these two fine players.

They started steadily, but accelerated as the total – and the rainclouds – approached, scoring 54 from the last four overs as Green hit an undefeated 79 and Wake 61 not out.

HEAVY overnight rain and another afternoon shower gave Saints two points for an abandoned game at Woodbank on Sunday.
