Rochdale 38ao - 39-5 Ashton

ASHTON showed some late-season form with a convincing victory over last season’s champions Rochdale at Redbrook on Saturday.
Led by their tireless skipper Zafar Zaman, who blasted through the Rochdale top order, Ashton bounced back from consecutive defeats and finally showed some fight to drag themselves off the basement spot.
Zaman made full use of the helpful conditions, bowling with accuracy and pace to remove the first four Rochdale batters.
With the hosts languishing at the wrong end of the table, and perhaps unused to being on the receiving end of such punishment, the damage was done, but not even the most optimistic visiting supporter could have envisaged a collapse of the magnitude that meant none of the home batsmen reached double figures.
After Zaman’s early burst of 4-19, Kieran O’Connor, (3-15) and Ian Daniel (3-4), joined the party to reduce the shell-shocked hosts to a miserable 38 all out.
The wicket may have been tinged with green thanks to the recent damp weather, but the Ashton attack still had to land the ball in the right areas and for once, it fired on all cylinders to reduce the Rochdale innings to rubble.
That Ashton lost five wickets in their quickfire response to overhauling the Rochdale target was due to some over-ambitious shot selection and adrenaline-charged efforts to end the game in record time.
Daniel proved to be the unmovable force, however, and the Sri Lankan produced a thoroughly professional innings to see his side home, hitting the only boundary of the match to seal victory.
