GLOSSOP travelled to league leaders Denton St Lawrence knowing that nothing short of a victory would keep them in touch at the top of the Lancashire County League with games running out.

The playing surface was soft and green, and it was therefore no surprise that on winning the toss, Saints elected to bowl first.

Toft and Pennington started in a watchful, yet confident manner, and moved the visitors to 35 before Pennington attempted to loft a ball from Batty over the infield, only for the mistimed stroke to find its way into the welcome hands of mid-off.

Two overs and eight runs later, the hosts were celebrating again when Toft edged the ball behind off the bowling of Green for 24.

Perera and Bates took the score to 106 before the latter was out for 13, followed by Wilson (12) and Kenyon (13).

Man-of-the-match Perera began to play more expansively in the final 10 overs, reaching his century from 79 balls on his way to 120.

Saints’ reply started to falter as early as the fourth over when Hawley edged Moss to Pennington.

Allen and Wake were dismissed to leave them on 25-3 before Glossop earned the prized wicket of Paul Green.

Two wickets for Hargreaves saw Saints 59-6 before Harwick and Perera accounted for Mayne and Williams respectively.

However, the rain arrived and under the rules, left Saints requiring 40 from nine balls, only to see out those deliveries comfortably.
