Droylsden 0 - 2 Cambridge Utd

9/ 4/2008

BLOODS’ boss Dave Pace was left to reflect on the number of the games his side have played of late after defeat left them contemplating relegation.

He said: "I think today was just a game too far for us, even I’m physically strained! I’m not making excuses – Cambridge beat us from start to finish. We must win as many as possible of our remaining six games. Altrincham have found a reprieve for the last three seasons and I still maintain that Halifax should be relegated."

It was Cambridge boss, Jimmy Quinn, who saw his side make a dream start when Courtney Pitt’s deep corner was headed back across goal by Wayne Hatswell for Ben Farrell to hook home off the underside of the bar from 10 yards.

Hatswell headed too high and Josh Coulson also had a header deflected over for a corner as the visitors took control of proceedings in the opening 45 minutes.

Droylsden threatened briefly after the break through Chris Denham and Levi Mackin, but Danny Potter was able to gather Mackin’s deflected shot.

Any thoughts of a Bloods comeback were quashed on 52 minutes when Rob Wooleaston won possession and the ball fell to Beesley just outside the box where his right-footed drive found the top corner and gave Paul Phillips no chance.

Wooleaston shot a yard wide from the edge of the box before the game declined in terms of goalmouth action until the final minute when Mackin hauled back Wooleaston, conceding a penalty.

Although Lee Boylan is the usual spot kick taker, Pitt took the ball and saw Phillips save his initial shot before lifting the rebound over the bar.

Attendance: 634
