Staying put

18/ 6/2008

DELIGHTED Curzon Ashton boss Gary Lowe has saluted his prolific striker Mike Norton after the 27-year-old penned a two-year extension to his current contract.

Norton, who has scored an amazing 90 goals for Curzon in the last two seasons, resisted overtures from a number of rival semi-pro clubs before opting to stay with Lowe and his squad at the Tameside Stadium.

Lowe told the Advertiser: "Mickey is a very important player for our club so it’s great news that he’s decided to stick with us. He’s a prolific scorer, one of the best around. A number of clubs had made us aware of their interest in him, some even offering Mickey bigger deals than we could, but great credit to him for re-signing for us. He likes it at Curzon, he appreciates what we’re trying to achieve, and he, like me, is confident that he can win things with us. He is probably the best signing I’ve ever made, he’s more than paid his way during the three seasons he’s been at Curzon.

"He works hard, his attitude is superb, and he has a very strong character. Mickey also possesses a fantastic desire to win. He’s a terrific header of the ball considering he’s not the biggest, and his timing is superb. He’ll battle with any centre-half too, he has no fear."

A former Nottingham Forest trialist, Stalybridge-based Norton joined Curzon from Woodley Sports three summers ago. Meanwhile, Lowe revealed that he has been talking to four of five potential new players ahead of next season’s UniBond First Division North campaign.

The Curzon players have already resumed pre-season training, and a number of friendly fixtures have been confirmed.

Matches against Hyde United, FC United and FA Vase winners Kirkham and Wesham have already been arranged, as has a prestige game at home to Nottingham Forest on Monday, July 28.

That game has been arranged as part of the deal that took ex-Curzon starlet Richard Tait to the City Ground last season, and Forest boss Colin Calderwood has already indicated that he will send a strong side to the Tameside Stadium.
