Forward thrust

20/ 8/2008

CURZON Ashton manager Gary Lowe believes strikers Mike Norton and Steve Moore hold the key to their promotion hopes for 2008/09.

Having reached the play-off semi-final during last season’s UniBond League Division One North campaign, Curzon started their season at Salford City on Tuesday as the Advertiser went to press.

While keen to avoid a case of ‘second season syndrome’ the Curzon boss reckons good times could lie ahead.

Lowe said: "I don’t think there’s a better (forward) partnership in the league than Moore and Norton. I believe that if we’d had Moore last year we could have gone up. He’d have chipped in with 20-25 goals. If he does that and Norton gets his usual 25-30 goals, we have a chance (of promotion). There won’t be many strikeforces who get 50-plus goals a season. I feel we’re a stronger side than last year, there’s a great resolve after the feeling of disappointment we had at the end of the season."

However, Norton and Andy Watson will be missing at the start for three and four games respectively.

Consequently, Lowe is challenging the rest of his squad to try and make up for their absences.

He said: "It’s important we try and scrap a bit when we’re under strength. If we can do that, get some points on the board and then get those two back, I believe we’re a stronger side than last year. I always think you get a picture of what’s going to happen after 10 games. Sides like Woodley Sports and Mossley have new managers and it wouldn’t surprise me if they improve markedly."
