Hucknall Town 2-3 Stalybridge Celtic

20/ 8/2008

CELTIC continued their encouraging start to the season in deepest Nottinghamshire, but a couple of self-induced errors had the travelling faithful waiting anxiously for the final whistle.

Steve Burr’s men were caught out in the sixth minute when a hopeful punt found Town’s Dave Kettle in acres of space and he lashed a rising dive past the helpless Paul Phillips.

Despite dominating possession until half-time the Celts found keeper James Lindley in inspired form.

When referee Mike Dexter missed a blatant handball in the box, it began to look as if it was not going to be Celtic’s day, but Terry Barwick struck a free kick off Gary Ricketts and past the wrongfooted Lindley. From then on, there was only realistically going to be one winner.

The otherwise excellent Nathan Joynes squandered a great chance and Lindley saved well at the foot of the post from Chris Williams.

The breakthrough arrived on 63 minutes courtesy of a sublime finish from Lee Ellington, calmly picking his spot from the edge of the box. Five minutes later, the game seemed over when Nathan Winder bowled Ashley Woolliscroft over in the box and Steve Torpey beat Lindley from the spot. However, defensive naivety allowed Danny Bacon to power home an unmarked header from a Laurie Wilson corner.

With confidence surging through Burr’s young charges, Southport’s tenure at the top of the Blue Square North could prove to be shortlived – all roads lead to Bower Fold on Saturday when the leaders visit.
