LANCASTER would have left with all three points but for some poor finishing as Curzon started the season with two points from nine.

The local side began brightly enough, Dave Birch’s cross being cut out by Guy Heffernan with Jamie Byrne waiting to pounce.

Byrne’s goalbound shot struck a defender and went out for a corner, from which Neil Uberschar headed Phil Edghill’s effort off the line.

David Carnell kept his side on level terms with a save in the first minute of stoppage time, using his left boot to turn Michael Rushton’s shot away.

Lancaster should have taken the lead four minutes into the second period when Dave Foster found himself one-on-one with Carnell. His shot struck the left-hand post and bounced across goal to the unmarked Mark Jackson, whose effort went wide.

Carnell once again stood between Lancaster and the opening goal as he thwarted Aaron Helliwell. It was perhaps no surprise that Lancaster went ahead on 56 minutes as Chris Curley’s slack ball enabled the visitors to break forward, Jackson slotting home.

It was good fortune that brought the local team level on 83 minutes as they battled for, and won, the ball on the left-hand side.

Alex Elliott gained possession before sending a cross into the box which drifted goalwards, and with Thornley committed, over his outstretched arms and into the net.
