Droylsden 2-1 Hyde Utd

DROYLSDEN stole the Tameside bragging rights with a winning goal from full-back Sean Newton with the clock ticking on to 90 minutes.

It was a cruel blow on a well organised Tigers side that deservedly led at half-time through James Dean’s strike, after he had side-stepped Mike Byron to shoot past Craig Mawson, making his debut in the Bloods’ goal.

The running of Hyde’s front two made it easy for their midfielders to play through their hosts during the early stages, although Kevin Townson rattled the Hyde crossbar with a volley from 25 yards with Craig Dootson beaten.

Mawson then saved from Dean after his first shot had been blocked, before Aaron Burns played the ball across the face of the Hyde goal, eluding both defenders and attackers alike.

After the break, Mitch Bailey forced another save from Mawson, but then Droylsden began to put some pressure on their near neighbours by forcing a string of corners, from one of which Steve Halford headed just off target.

Burns also elected to shoot when Townson was better placed from Paul Gedman’s cross as Droylsden looked to level matters.

Just after the hour mark, Dootson fumbled the ball and Burns’ resultant shot was blocked on the line by Karl Munroe.

Dootson saved from Carl Lamb, but Hyde failed to fully clear the ball and Burns volleyed into the top corner on 74 minutes.

Hyde looked dangerous on the break, and Simm benefited from a slip by Byron to set up Nicky Clee, but he shot high and wide.

Burns claimed that Chris Lynch had handled his cross, but the referee was having none of it, before Wayne Madem headed wide after arriving late at the far post for the visitors.

Dootson turned a shot from Newton away for a corner, but from the flag kick Newton collected the ball on the edge of the box, beat two men, and then rifled a shot into the roof of the net to steal the points.
