MANCHESTER Alliance representatives are appealing for more golfers to take part in their competitions.

Presently, 110 clubs and professionals are part of the Alliance with golfers from all member clubs entitled to enter their various competitions.

President John Dowd said: “We are the biggest and most active Alliance in the country and always looking to bring in new initiatives.

“We have great support from our 110 clubs and professionals throughout the year with many good prizes on offer and our club team knock outs are unique and very keenly contested.

“What many golfers do not realise is that if their club is affiliated to the Alliance they are eligible to enter our competitions.

“All clubs have application forms available some weeks before events and a full programme of our competitions.”

Current captain, Bolton Old Links’ Ian Brooks, has regularly played in the Alliance for seven years along with club colleagues Ged Gaffey and Roger Nicholson.

Brooks, who is also treasurer of the Manchester Captain’s Society, is hoping for good weather that will enable them to fulfil the winter fixtures.

He said: “It is a great honour both for myself and my club to be chosen as captain of the biggest, most active, and one of the oldest Alliances in the country.

“I am hoping for a dry winter to enable us to get through our busy fixture list which gets full support from club pros and has a variety to suit all categories of golfer during the season’s with winter competitions each week, as well as the hugely popular team knockout competitions among our 110 member clubs during the summer months.

“In the time that I have played in the Alliance I have met some very good golfers but above all they are nice, friendly people who are a pleasure to be with.”

The remaining fixtures for the first half of the season are: October 24 – shotgun Stableford (Styal); October 31 – greensome Stableford (Shrigley Hall); November 7 – shotgun greensome (Warrington); November 14 – shotgun greensome (Bury); November 21 – shotgun greensome (Wilpshire); November 28 – shotgun greensome (Mottram Hall); December 5 – shotgun greensome Stableford (Leigh).

Fixtures can also be found by visiting either www.wgtbgolf.co.uk or www.mdga.org.uk

Winter golf is now in full flow and will continue at all clubs until next March.
