ASHTON produced a reasonable performance against highly-placed opponents, meaning it was far from ridiculous to suggest that result could have been different had their pack stayed at full strength.
The first 20 minutes of this game against second-placed Burnley saw things closely balanced with both teams probing for openings, but with both packs keeping the ball close, scoring opportunities were few on the ground.
The stalemate was broken though after Ashton had worked the ball into their opponents’ 22 metre area where Burnley were adjudged to be offside and a well worked move ended with Dave Stanley breaking through tackles for the opening try.
Unfortunately the home side were unable to capitalise on this and gave away two unnecessary penalties, both of which were kicked as Burnley led 6-5 at the break.
Burnley surged forward from the restart, crashing over for their first try and an 11-5 advantage.
Ashton responded well to that reverse, but lost Paul Wilson and Bob Crickett to head injuries before the second half was 15 minutes old.
With Mick O’Meara operating in the totally unfamiliar role of hooker, they found possession difficult to maintain for the rest of the game, despite showing 100 per cent commitment, they conceded two further tries, one of which was converted to end the scoring.
