Aldwinians 0 - 41 Driffield

20/ 2/2008

AFTER the cup win at Tyldesley and and a close-fought match last week at Crossleyans, Aldwinians’ confidence levels were boosted for the tie against high-flying Driffield last Saturday.

However, the visitors had their own incentives as they chase, at least, a play-off spot and Aldwinians ended up suffering a heavy 41-0 defeat.

Driffield set up camp on the Aldwinians’ 22 line from kick-off and the pressure was rewarded with a penalty, which was taken quickly to give Driffield a try after four minutes.

Aldwinians went on the offensive and were awarded their own penalty in easy kicking range but James Worrall put the attempt wide.

Almost immediately Driffield were allowed to attack and extended their lead to 12-0 on 12 minutes.

This spurred Aldwinians into action and they dominated possession and territory for the next 10 minutes, with captain Bob Palmer leading by example and going on the first of a number of penetrating runs.

Sound in defence as well as elusive in attack , the Driffield three-quarters resisted the assault and regained ground.

A yellow card for scrum-half Paul Thorpe put the pressure back on the home side but they coped well until the half-hour mark when Driffield’s number nine broke from a scrum and evaded tackles to touch down by the posts.

A further two tries before the break, and two in the second-half completed the scoring for the visitors.

There is no first team game this Saturday. Aldwinians’ next match is on March 1 away at Morpeth (kick-off 3pm).

This week at Audenshaw Park the seconds play Didsbury Toc H and the fourth team meet Burnage (ko 2.15pm).
