Aspatria 62 - 3 Aldwinians

5/ 3/2008

ALDWINIANS’ difficult season continued 160 miles up the A1 at Morpeth where the hosts were in sparkling form, scoring 10 tries to inflict a heavy defeat in this North Two East league encounter.

Having suffered a number of late changes to the squad, the Aldwinians players were determined to give their all and their effort was evident throughout the game, although they were second best in all departments

Tries came at regular intervals in the first half, starting in the fourth minute from turnover ball which was eagerly welcomed by the Morpeth backs.

A scrum option following a penalty in the visitors’ 22 brought the second score on 16 minutes before quick lineout ball five minutes later enabled the home backs to break the defensive line for another try and a 19-0 advantage.

The Aldwinians forwards showed what they were made of when circumstances allowed as a number of good attacks put Morpeth on the back foot, but they came back to score again on the half-hour and effectively seal the game at 26-0 .

Matters were not helped when centre Pete Hughes was yellow carded to the sinbin for 10 minutes for a rash challenge on the scorer of the next try as the score went up to 31-0, although a little consolation came by way of a penalty and three points for Aldwinians before half-time.

The second half looked to be shaping up a bit better for the visitors, because although they conceded a further two tries before the hour, a scoreless 25 minutes followed as Aldwinians started to compete on a more even basis and make some strong attacks deep into Morpeth territory.

Sadly for them, the status quo was re-established late in the game with three tries for Morpeth in the last five minutes.
