West’s successful start

30/ 4/2008

Denton West.............212-7
Woodbank.................60ao

DENTON West kicked off the new cricket season on Saturday with a comprehensive demolition of Bury outfit Woodbank at Windsor Park.

With the boys from Dane Bank boosted by the arrival of new signings, wicketkeeper Dave Ashworth and all-rounder Paul Turner from local rivals Dukinfield, their visitors simply had no answer.

Having seen Gareth Senior lose the toss and asked to bat first on what looked a decent track, West were quick to make hay with Senior hitting the first six of the campaign, followed by two more boundaries as 16 came off Ali’s opening over.

The openers had added 25 before McAllister fell, bowled by an early-season shooter, while Scott Kirwin (four) picked out deep square leg with unerring accuracy off the bowling of new Woodbank professional, Ryan Senior.

Debutant Turner joined his captain and the pair added 40 in good time, running the opposing fielders ragged with some lightning quick singles.

With the score on 80 Gareth Senior (41) departed the scene, quickly followed by Turner and Stringer with West teetering at 109-5.

Andy O’Brien came out to join Mike Berry and the pair first steadied the ship before taking the game away from the visitors, rattling up 92 in even time.

The seemingly daunting task proved just so for the Bury boys as Kirwin ripped out the top and middle order, taking 4-10 from nine overs.

However, it was his opening partner Dave Letven who made the initial breakthrough, bowling Patel for eight before Kirwin accounted for Ridehaugh, Ryan Senior and McShayne.

The introduction of Turner and Stringer did not provide any respite as they were both quickly in the wickets, taking 2-10 and 3-14 respectively as Woodbank collapsed to 60 all out.

- WEST’S seconds enjoyed a one-wicket win at Woodbank, new captain Chris Parry seeing them through.
