Many medals

16/ 7/2008

TEAM Tameside were among the medals as over 3,000 children from across the region competed in last weekend’s 20th Greater Manchester Youth Games.

More than 250 of the participants represented Tameside in the 13 different sports, played at four different sites.

Golds went to the girls’ football, under-15s boys’ hockey, under-15s netball and girls’ volleyball teams, while there was also a gold in the judo competition.

Silver medals went to the senior cheerleading and boys’ table tennis teams, as well as one of the judo competitors.

There were two further bronze medals in judo, as well as for the girls’ cricket, junior cheerleading and girls’ volleyball sides.

Team Tameside finished fourth in the rugby tournament, the under-13s boys’ hockey and the under-15s’ girls equivalent.

They were also in action in the athletics, badminton, under-13s netball, tennis, boys volleyball and waterpolo sections.

Team organiser Bhagvati Mistry said "This event takes months of preparation, not only with the young people training, but without the help and support from local schools and local voluntary club coaches we would not have a team.

"Team Tameside are renowned for their dedication at the Games and once again upheld our reputation of fair play throughout.

"The young people of Tameside have done the borough proud and I am sure that this experience will stay with them for a very long time to come."

Julie Hardman, representing Team Tameside sponsor New Charter Trust, added: "The Greater Manchester Youth Games was a huge success for Team Tameside and all the young people did our borough proud."
