Vaughan sets pace as club series hots up

MARTIN Morrison, organiser of the Glossopdale Harriers club championship series, has had his work cut out recently due to the lack of fell races.

Nevertheless Vaughan McKay, a veteran over 40, currently leads the series in which the best six races from 12 count.

At one race a month Mr Morrison has had a dearth of races to choose from, and then the Kinder Downfall fell race was cancelled due to the foot-and-mouth epidemic. The Charlesworth and Chisworth challenge was the latest to fall victim.

The next two races in the annual club championships are the Tame Valley Trail seven-miler on July 25 from St Lawrence's church in Denton, and then a week later on August 1 it is 'Up the Nab' from Glossop Rugby Club.

The latter race is back after a two-year break and thanks must go to organiser Des Gibbons, a runner from Hadfield who competes for Altrincham.

The race is from Glossop Rugby Club at Hargate Hill, through Charlesworth and is over four-and-a-half miles.

Starting at 7.15pm, the old course record of 24 minutes, 48 seconds, was set by Andy Trigg who has an excellent record at a wide range of distances from this to the two-day Karrimor mountain marathon.

Both races are open to anyone who is up to the challenge, not just the seemingly fast and furious.

Both are an ideal introduction to off-road or trail runs, and should be within the compass of most healthy individuals.
