Leaking goals is our big problem

27/12/2001

SOCCER: Curzon skipper Matty Weardon tells Captain's Diary why his side will be hoping to banish a disappointing start to the season in 2002.

Our season at Curzon has, overall, been a bit of a disappointment after we had got off to quite a decent start.

We've definitely gone off the boil a bit just lately, and we'll need to be on our toes during our tough Christmas programme.

We're playing well enough I suppose, but not scoring enough goals. Meanwhile we're leaking too many daft goals at the back.

There's some raw talent here at National Park among some of the younger lads. John Worsley has scored something like 15 or 16 goals from only 20-odd games, Craig Fleury is a danger up front for us and Matthew Lee has popped a few in just lately.

But we could perhaps do with a bit more experience in defence - we need to be tighter in that department.

I can now say, hand on heart, that we're not going to win the league this term, but we're still in the Manchester Premier Cup and I'm looking to the tie with Mossley in January.

We've had some cracking league and cup matches with Mossley over the last two seasons, and it'll be interesting to see how they've changed their style of play since installing Ally Pickering.

I'm still waiting to hear the bad news regarding the length of my impending suspension. That'll probably be at least a month out of the side for me when it comes through.

There's a player I know over at Abbey Hey and he's awaiting a similar fate. The County FA have told him that it will be January at the earliest before they make a decision.
