SOCCER: Glossop 2 Atherton LR 1

Glossop's 2-1 victory over Atherton LR has given the Surrey Street side vital breathing space in the bid to escape from the North West Counties first division drop zone.

First half goals from Steve Jordan and Andy Levendis propelled the Hillmen four points clear of second-bottom Atherton Collieries, so manager Chris Nicholson is a relieved man.

He said: "Our recent form is encouraging, we showed a lot of guts to come from behind on Saturday.

"We worked hard in certain areas so it's a start.

"We bounced back with an important win after a disappointing draw with Congleton and a scarcely deserved defeat at Warrington.

"We won't be resting on our laurels though, the hard work goes on."

This Saturday Glossop host neighbours Curzon Ashton and Nicholson will be eager to exact a litlle revenge after Gary Lowe's side won the September fixture 7-1 at National Park.

Nicholson added: "We got beat heavily last time, but the personnel at Glossop has changed significantly since.

"We've got a good home record too."

Steve Jordan looks likely to feature again after his goalscoring return from a month out last Saturday.

Meanwhile, Nicholson has swooped to sign goalkeeper Stuart Williams from NWCFL rivals Woodley Sports.
